Sirius Debuts new Radiohead Album: In Rainbows

Radiohead recently shocked the world with news of the purely online release of their brand new album, In Rainbows. The band has shocked record companies as well as fans by giving consumers the option of paying what they want for a digital download of the CD. Also, their is a box set version which includes a vinyl version of the album for about eighty dollars USD. Sirius radio station "left of center" will be playing every new song from the album all week long.

"In Rainbows" has received mostly positive reviews. Fans have described the album as somewhere in between previous records "OK Computer" and "Kid A". The album seems to have a lot of the electronic sounds that Radiohead is famous for, as well as great guitar parts and melodies reminiscent of their more pop-focused efforts.

The Best thing about "In Rainbows" is its return to the Radiohead five man show we all know and love. It seems front man Thom Yorke has gotten most of his experimental music out of his system with his previous release of a solo/electronic themed album "Eraser". The whole album seems to have a great broad appeal, and reminiscent of Thom Yorke's biggest influence: Jeff Buckley. It almost seems as if the band is trying to not reinvent the wheel this time, which in Radioheads case, is a good thing, but surely if they decide to in the future, everyone will be o.k with it.

Motorola reveals FM Capable Cell Phones

With the electronics market changing and becoming increasingly competitive, Motorola hopes to dip into the buyers market established by this years "super phone/mp3 player/camera/palm pilot/laser cannon" phenomenons like apples "i-phone" and the Microsoft's "Zune" by introducing the "W-series", A line of sleek new phones with the ability to feature internal FM radio capability.

In light of the recent popularity of satellite radio, the move to FM seems like a risky venture for Motorola, but it does hold some advantages over satellite radio, such as the ability to receive radio signal indoors, which for some consumers who commute on public transportation, work indoors, or live in a large urban area, would be a huge selling point against satellite radio, especially the portable versions. It will be interesting to see how these FM radio phones will pan out and if Sirius or XM will be able to provide a similar type of integration to jump the hurdle that the lack of reception indoors creates. In the long run, Satellite radio still holds the deck of cards so to speak in advantages over FM (Variety of Selection, Editing, Lack of Commercials etc.), but the ability to reach EVERBODY, easily could sway some consumers to come back to their long lost friend FM.

These trends should be interesting to watch in the upcoming months as the W-Series makes its debut. Also any consumer interested in industry trends can't help but wonder, what will they come up with next? In other words: only time will tell.

Howard Stern: Still the King of Media

It has been almost 22 months since Howard Stern made the leap into orbit, but even now, he still carries a huge influence on what is happening in terrestrial radio. When Stern made the decision to move to satellite, the impact was far more reaching than just a new studio. There was a virtual vacuum left in his wake as radio companies scrambled to find new programming, and reinvented their formats in an effort to become more relevant to consumers. Sterns’ move actually became an opportunity for the “little guys” to make an inroads and win over new listeners.

When King Of All Media made his decision to move to satellite radio, there were hundreds of radio stations that saw an opportunity to make their own mark. Being number 1 was back up for grabs on terrestrial, and a shift in the ratings book balance was about to happen. It would take time to pan out, but in the minds of many radio operations, there was once again a chance. Sterns move actually invited a new vigor amongst many stations that simply had become complacent.

It was announced yesterday that New York City has a new number one terrestrial radio station. For the first time in over 20 years, Z100 FM became the number one station in New York. While the press release did not mention it, the feat would not have been possible if Howard Stern was still on the air at K-ROCK. Stern dominated the airwaves for a period of decades. His number one position was so entrenched, that other radio stations simply tried their best at becoming number two, and second place became the ultimate goal that any other station could hope for. When Stern left, the race was on.

In many ways, Stern is actually responsible for terrestrial radio stations thinking outside the box. He is responsible for radio companies taking risks again with new formats, new talent, and a new vigor. Some terrestrial radio stations even cut a deal with XM Satellite Radio (one of the terrestrial radio “enemies”), to bring Opie and Anthony, who themselves had made the move to satellite, back onto terrestrial airwaves in nineteen markets. The Opie and Anthony Show have posted what can only be termed as mixed results. The XM shock jock duo are available in the New York Market, but have been unable to reach the type of ratings that Stern delivered as exampled by the top New York spot going to Z100.

When Stern moved to satellite, there were those that stated that he would make himself irrelevant. That assessment could not be further from the truth. Millions have come to Sirius since he arrived, and not a quarter has passed since that arrival that Sirius has not garnered a retail advantage over their competitor XM. That is only half of the equation though. Sterns relevance also has been demonstrated in the terrestrial radio world he left behind. What has also been demonstrated over the past 22 months is that terrestrial radio is indeed competing with satellite radio. There has never been a period of time where the number of format changes, host changes, and jockeying for position has been so prevalent. These stations clearly demonstrated that they were indeed eager to get the attention of the audio entertainment consumer.

Whatever your opinion of Stern, there are simply some things that can not be debated. He carries influence and relevance in whatever he does. Perhaps that is why he is called THE KING OF ALL MEDIA.

Sirius and XM any closer to merger?

Sirius & XM Any Closer?

CNBC just had some back to back coverage regarding Sirius Satellite Radio and possibly of XM Satellite Radio. We've been closely monitoring this merger and it just seems that at least the chances of a "biast toward approval" have increased at least a bit.

David Faber got to interview Sirius' CEO Mel Karmazin. Karmazin noted to Faber that both Sirius and XM have each sent in 6 million pages of documents to the regulatory agencies and have communicated with the FCC. Karmazin said he thinks the chances should be 100% that the deal closes in his opinion, but he wouldn't give any formal percentage chances that the merger would really pass regulatory scrutiny. The backup plan is sort of a business as usual if the deal does get blocked. The truth is there wasn't really anything new in the interview.

Shortly after the David Faber interview, Jim Cramer came on CNBC (with a slur from root canals) discussing this and said he thinks the companies will get the deal done and that could get it to a $5.00 stock.

We'll know fairly soon if this will occur or not by the end of the year. We have covered this ourselves with recent notes about the chances getting higher that the deal could close. One thing is for sure though: If the DOJ blocks this merger, XM and Sirius are both likely to announce substantially higher monthly prices to remain viable. We recently noted how it sure sounded like the XM group was preparing to operate as its its own entity.

We have reviewed this merger on and off, but have not yet made any formal calls for our Special Situation Investing Newsletter subscribers. It is our opinion that the deal SHOULD be approved based upon other approvals, but ultimately this is at the mercy of too few key people that are deemed as being heavily under the influence of terrestrial radio lobbying to be able to make the "SHOULD" status become a "WILL" status. The government has rubber-stamped just about every single "inside the US merger" and the influence from the radio industry is what has been holding this up; and the DOJ recently requested more data. We have been reviewing Sirius and XM for the subscriber newsletter but have yet to make a determination we'd be willing to sign our name to. An analyst opinion is one thing, and a decision from the government is another.

Shares were up 1% at $3.58 before the call, but Sirius shares are now up 2% at $3.62 on over 33 million shares today after the two segments.

This is all good and valuable information, but what it really boils down to is how this merger will effect the consumer market, as well as the thousands of people who have electronics from either Sirius or XM. Will the equipment change? How will issues of compatibility of parts and price be effected?

There are news reports all over the internet that confirm the Sirius and XM will try to merge and that Mel Karmazin would run the company. This comes after this past Friday XM stock rose on the news that a merger could pass regulatory hurdles.

Radio Scores Superbowl Victory

While the vast majority of Super Bowl fans turned to TV to watch the game, they often turn to radio for pre- and post- game coverage. According to a custom sports study released Wednesday from Arbitron, 35 percent of Indianapolis Adults 18 and older, and 24 percent of Chicago Adults, listened to pre-game or post-game coverage of the Super Bowl on the radio.

“Chicago has a reputation for being a sports-savvy town, but for this one event, Indianapolis fans showed more fervor than the big city residents,” said Mason Meyer, manager of custom sports sales for Arbitron. Arbitron conducted the study the day after the game on Monday, Feb. 5.

Sports Talk radio drew huge audiences for the run-up to Sunday’s game. More than half of the Adults in both home-team cities, 54 percent in Indianapolis and 52 percent in Chicago, said they listened to Sports Talk radio during the week before the game. Of those listeners, 37 percent said they listened more than usual. Post-game radio listening was higher in the winning town, with 22 percent of Indianapolis respondents saying they listened to post-game radio coverage compared to 10 percent in Chicago.

No surprise that the radio audience pales in comparison to the TV audience with 93 percent in Indianapolis and 82 percent in Chicago saying they watched some part of the pre-game, game and post-game coverage on TV.

As expected, out-of-home TV viewing was also high. Thirty percent of Indianapolis adults watched the Super Bowl outside their own home, 92 percent at a friend’s or family member’s home. Only 6 percent of out of home viewing was in a bar or restaurant.

In Chicago, 28 percent of adults said they viewed the game outside their own home with 76 percent going to a friend’s or family’s home for the vent. Only 9 percent of out of home viewing was in a bar or restaurant.

A good percentage of viewers said they paid “very close attention” to the TV commercials, 39 percent in Indianapolis and 37 percent in Chicago.

Sirius gets good ole Blue Eyes!

Sirius announced today that they will be adding a 24/7 channel dedicated to Sinatra and his music. The "Siriusly Sinatra" channel will be replacing the current channel "standard time" on Ch 75. The Channel is said to be produced by the Sinatra Family and the Sinatra Enterprises having his music along with the other swing and big band genre artists.

Sirius and the Sinatra family will create The Chairman's Hour, using spoken word and music from the Sinatra archives, hosted by Frank himself.

The Channel will also feature a weekly show hosted by Frank Sinatra's daughter, Nancy Sinatra, talking about her memories of her father and more. They say that the channel will include live performances and archived material from the Sinatra Family collection.

This announcement comes on the heels of XM dropping it's "Frank's Place" Channel last month.

Bubba the Love "Manning"??

Well much like Peyton Manning, our Howard 101 favorite is becoming an advertising juggernaut of sorts... Well at least Bubba is out and about promoting and pushing not just Sirius. Bubba has been seen in many ads in print media for Prosource Performance supplements, saying that he lost 70lbs with diet, training (with Hogan), and that using one of Prosouces products. Bubba has been seen in a few fitness magazines and is now a spokemans of sort for Prosource, a role which he is sharing with Survivor star Stephanie LaGrossa who is pushing Prosources protein supplements products. Bubba will be spending time this spring doing appearances for Prosource at The Arnold Classic in Columbus, signing copies of his article in Muscle & Fitness magazine due out on news stands in a couple of week.

But to GSI, at least Bubba is out there building not only his name, but Sirius' image as well.

Jamie Foxx's "FOXXHOLE" Channel

Sirius Announced that they will have a new comedy channel sometime this spring. Sirius Channel 106 will be FOXXHOLE, a channel for exclusive urban comedy, entertainment and lifestyle Programming. Academy Award winning Actor and American Music award winning singer, Jamie Foxx will be the executive producer for the channel. Foxx won the Best Actor nod from the Academy in 2005 for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the movie "Ray." Also co-executive producer will be Marcus King who has worked with Foxx in the past on may of his entertainment ventures including the short lived "The Jamie Foxx Show."

The Channel will be a 24/7 of programming focused around urban comedy bits, skits, music, and radio theatre. "SIRIUS Satellite Radio gives me the opportunity to create urban entertainment and programming like you have never heard on the radio." says Foxx. Foxx will host a weekly show on the channel as well as daily "segments" in which he will record no matter where he is or what he is doing in the world.

FCC says NOT A CHANCE!

The AP reported today that Sirius and XM stocks plundged yesterday afternoon after the FCC commisioner said that there is no chance that the two satrads will be able to merge. Kenin Martin said that the 2 lincenes that were granted to the companies procluded them in ever joining together. The more and more you hear about the possible merger the more and more Mr Martin comes out with guns blaring that the FCC will not allow it. THE SAGA CONTINUES!

GSI sends out its best wishes to Howard 101's afternoon drive jock got hitched over the weekend to girlfriend Heather Cole. Joining the whole "Sponge" crew at the wedding was Howard Stern and all of the shows regulars. Also there was Hulk Hogan and family, who hopefully where there with their "Hogan Knows Best" Crew (I doubt it!).

Eric Deggans in his St Petersburg Times article said that the wedding was "Unusually Normal" and that Clem and Cole got married at the First Baptist Church of St Petersburg.

Well I bet the videos on Howard TV are going to be worth the monthly charge. According to Stern this morning, Howard TV filmed "everything."

Spectrum's Dave Mac passes away at the age of 43.

For those of you who are Spectrum fans you probable noticed that mid-day host Dave Mac left the air sometime in early December. Announced on Tuesday that Dave passed away to Brain Cancer over the weekend and the Spectrum has been running a tribute to him all week. Here is his Obituary as posted at Sirius.com

Long time SIRIUS host Dave McNamara (Â?Dave MacÂ?) passed away Saturday morning, succumbing to cancer. He was 43 years old. For the better part of his life, Dave was a musician...playing in and producing a number of bands along the same New Jersey shore that gave rise to Bruce Springsteen. Dave Mac was also a lifelong fan and connoisseur of music of all varieties. A great host here at SIRIUS, and before SIRIUS, at various radio stations across the country. Hopefully you were able to hear him on the Spectrum, SIRIUS Disorder, or SIRIUS Blues. He made SIRIUS a better place Â? and if you knew him, you know that his contributions were far greater than merely his on-air work. Dave Mac could evoke laughter, tears, and significant thought...all within the course of one radio show. Dave Mac was a great communicator...and also, perhaps above all else, a great interviewer. If you were lucky enough to hear Dave's conversations with some of the biggest stars in the history of rock music, then you were the beneficiary of some of the most frank and forthright discussions you could ever hope to eavesdrop on. From The Rolling Stones to John Mayer, Neil Young to Coldplay, The Who, B.B. King, Bob Seger, Pete Yorn, Keb Mo, Beth Orton, and so many others, DaveÂ?s engaging nature brought out the absolute best in those he spoke with. ...on a personal note. I listened to Dave Mac every weekday from noon until I left work at 4 over Sirius Internet Radio. Not only was he one of the best andknowledableedable jocks I had ever heard. I always looked forward to his interviews with artists and just loved to hear his random knowledge of some track his was about to spin. If you get a chance listen to the tribute show... It really does showcase his great on-air abilities! I will say from working in the industry for year. Dave Mac was a DJ's....DJ! I will miss listening to him.

Mel and the boys from Sirius have been busy this week at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sirius' big annoucement this week was the introduction of the "Sirius Backseat TV." Backseat is going to be a TV service fed via Sirius satellites to you car with programming geared toward children. The service is dues to be available in cars as soon as the spring of this year. The Unit, The SiriusConnect SC-V1 Audio/Video Tuner, (which I assume will just be called the "SiriusConnect") will allows listener in the front set to listen to sirius radio broadcasts as passengers in the back can listen to the audio from whatever program they are watching on the "Backseat TV." No real information was given out other than that, except it is due to be available by Spring of this year.

FCC's Kevin Martin threatens to block Sirius/XM merger

FMQB reports that the FCC Chairman Kevin Martin would block any attempted merger between the 2 satellite radio giants. Just like the FCC did with DirecTV and Echostar a few years back, the FCC may block the possible merger of the only 2 SatRad companies.

Those of us who have been listening to Howard for awhile (back in the K-Rock/WBCN days!) think that the show sounds better than ever! It has been a great year for Sirius and Howard. 6 million subscribers (I started listening when there was less than a million!) and a profitable year. I am sure that all the stock holders are happy!

Audiovox shares sink without SIRIUS and XM Problems

Shares of Audiovox Corp. tumbled on Wednesday, a day after the consumer electronics firm reported a worse-than-expected quarterly loss, largely due to a sharp sales decline in mobile radios.

Sales mobile electronics, which represents 62% of sales, fell 14% to $67.4 million, after Audiovox stopped selling Sirius satellite radio units and voluntarily suspended sales of its XM Express radio because it failed to meet federal standards. The company was also hurt by declining SUV sales and one of its car audio suppliers went out of business.

Looks like NPR is losing some FM transmitters in Adam county Ohio. The "News Democrat" is telling its readers to get SIRIUS!

"NPR is supposed to serve underserved or disadvantaged areas - this definitely includes us," said concerned citizen Steve Boehme. "We will be be the only one of the three bought that will not have a secondary NPR source. Meanwhile, frequencies aren't cheap. (If we want NPR) we will have to buy Sirius radio to get it."

For the sixth year in a row, Howard Stern continues his reign as the most-searched-for talk radio personality on the Web, according to the Lycos 50, a weekly list of the most popular people, places and things that Web users search for everyday. Lycos says that Stern generated 232 percent more online interest in 2006 than the #2 host on the list, Adam Corolla. Since his move to Sirius Satellite Radio in January, Stern's online interest has dipped only 15 percent, and search activity for Sirius increased 1,300 percent in 2005 and another 128 percent in 2006.

Our good friends at TSS Radio sent us out a brand new Stiletto 100. I live in Germany and we wanted to see how the WiFi would work in Europe. So here is what we did, we activated the radio before it left the United States, to let it get the updates from the birds. Then shipped it international express DHL, on FRIDAY, and it got here today! MONDAY!! Right out of the DHL box the Stiletto packing was very extractive. When I was in the United States I owned an S50, and have been using over here with as a Mp3 player. Right away you can tell SIRIUS really thought this one out. The user interface is so easy to use. I scrolled right to SIRIUS internet radio, it found my local WiFi access point in my house, asked for the WAP code then the music started to flow. As most S100 owners know right now the 129Kbps internet radio stream is not on the Stiletto yet.. GSI is told that this will happen “soon” right now the audio is not the best over the WiFi but it works and it is not a band width hog. I did some testing driving around, and was able to pick up many hotspots, and enjoyed the live content. It is important to note that in Germany Hotspots are all over the place, and a good deal of them are open. Most of the time I have had to play with the S100 was in my home on my own network. You can see in the photo the Stiletto next to my T-COM Speedport, aka my wireless router. Coverage in my 4 story house was just fine, and I also cut my grass today with the S100 in m pocket, only once did it buffer. I’m very impressed with the display when streaming internet radio, it looks like you are getting content off the birds. If anyone is wondering there is no sat signal in Germany.. I also loaded a crap load of Mp3s off my computer, to me the load time was MUCH faster then the S50. So our little test of the S100 in Europe will go on, and I will keep you up to date on it. Once SIRIUS gets the better quality audio streaming on the Stiletto they have a BIG market in Germany with thousands of Americans stationed over here, be it military, or other international companies people want the content over here. I personally know of many who have subscribed to SIRIUS Internet Radio online, and are in love with getting the Music, Stern, and other SIRIUS channels. I love to listen to Jay Thomas, BUT SIRIUS Stars is not listed on my S100.. Why is this?!??! SIRIUS you need to get this FIXED ASAP.

So our review of the Stiletto is not for the average person in the USA, but if you travel, or know someone living around the world, this is a cool development. Now for a few review of the S100 check out our alliance partner Satellite Standard Group, they will have a full review very soon..

So here are the pros and cons:

Monster Astro: Three-Zone Sirius Tuner

Monster is breaking into the home automation market with a suite of products called Einstein, set to soft-launch at CES 2007 (full launch expected in March).

Einstein is not a whole system, but rather a series of components - allowing for a scalable home automation setup. But this isn't about Einstein (you can read about that here and here).

Nope, this is about one of the Einstein components, the Astro (pictured).

The Astro is a three-zone Sirius Satellite Radio tuner. Three-zone as in three different separate channels in three different rooms. Three-zone tuners don't come cheap apparently - the Astro will run you $1,500 (preliminary pricing).

The Monster Einstein is a Linux-based system that supports 1gb over Ethernet, as well as 802.11g/n, Z-Wave and BlueTooth wireless protocols. Whether or not this is how the Astro is able to handle three-zones without three separate subscriptions, via Sirius Internet Radio, is unknown but that would be my assumption. The Astro is fully functional as a stand-alone device.

S&P Raises SIRIUS Rating Outlook

S&P's outlook for SIRIUS was recently raised. It is still rated at CCC and the bonds still have a 9.722% current yield. The bond rating is important because the outstanding bonds are callable, which means that SIRIUS can redeem them whenever they want. In the case that SIRIUS continues it's financial progress and is eventually upgraded above a CCC it will be able to borrow at a lower rate (B ratings can typically borrow at 6.5% right now), which it would do and then use the proceeds of that bond issue to pay down the existing (expensive) bonds. Doing so would save them $40M+ / year in interest costs.

"Standard & Poor's Ratings Services raised its outlook on Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., citing the company's growing subscription base.

Last month, Sirius said it added 600,460 net subscribers in the second quarter, for a total of 4.68 million subscribers as of June 30. The company also raised its annual forecast to 6.3 million subscribers, up from its previous forecast of 6.2 million.

Standard & Poor's also affirmed Sirius's "CCC" rating on its corporate debt. "CCC," known as "junk" grade debt, indicates a high risk of default. The Manhattan-based satellite radio provider had about $1.1 billion in outstanding debt as of June 30."

Howard TV has put up two new Episodes for their subscribers to watch. The Original September 11, 2001 episode and the September 12, 2001 episode. The Howard Stern Show was one of the only Radio Programs to go on after the attacks that was not directly news.

If you have Charter Cable you are now able to subscribe to the $13.99 a month Howard TV Service, separate from SIRIUS. Charter has over 5.5 million subscribers and will be broadening the Howard TV service which also expands exposure for Sirius.

Wow! I just hit the front page of TSS-Radio and there was no Stiletto...

Checked Circuit City and Crutchfield...Crutchfield still had it up but Circuit City had taken it down.

Crutchfield had it down about an hour later.

Some of the other, smaller, shops like dogstarradios and jji electronics still have it up, but I am guessing that is just because they aren't as plugged in.

Something is afoot...we have no idea what...

Howard Stern Questions Reporter 'Mattew Flamm' About His Negative Article

" Howard had the reporter on the line who wrote the article he was talking about earlier. Matthew writes for Crains. Howard asked him where he gets his statistics from because they're talking about having over 6 million subscribers at the end of this year. He asked Matthew how he can paint him to be a total failure when SIRIUS has turned around and is now outselling XM radios. They've flipped over the stats since before he started there from XM having 60 percent of the market to SIRIUS having that much of the market.

Howard said he thinks that he is the major factor in SIRIUS' turn around but Matthew doesn't think that he's brought in all of those listeners. He thinks that Howard has promoted the service like crazy but he didn't bring in those 4 million subscribers who have come on since he signed on. Howard wondered where he gets the statistics from. Matthew said he got them from an analyst who said it's more like 1 million, not 4 million.

Matthew said he asked around inside SIRIUS and he was told that Howard brought in about 1.5 million subscribers. Howard said that's quite a jump from the one million he quoted in the article. Howard asked him to explain how, on the retail level, that XM has lost a third of the market and SIRIUS has gained all of that. Matthew said that he did credit Howard for that turn around but Howard didn't think he did.

Howard told Matthew that just because SIRIUS doesn't give out his numbers, it doesn't mean they're bad. Matthew said that from what he's been told, that's the number he got. It doesn't mean that his pull isn't stronger than that.

Howard said that he thinks that there is way more people out there signing up for SIRIUS because of him than what the analysts are saying. Matthew said that he was basically saying that since he moved to satellite, he's starting over again and he has to go out and make some noise to get more attention for himself. Howard said he thinks that he has already made the noise by moving to satellite.

Matthew thinks that Howard may have to go out and do more things to get attention. Howard said that maybe he does but he's actually cut back on the amount of publicity he was going to do because the radios are selling themselves. Howard let Matthew go a short time later and thanked him for calling in."

Crain's reported that Stern has lost cultural influence, having reduced his listener base from 12M to 1M since his move to SIRIUS.

"He bought his own hype, thinking everyone would follow him to Sirius," says rival host Anthony Cumia of Opie & Anthony. The duo recently took over Mr. Stern's old slot at WXRK--now Free FM--while continuing to do their show on XM Satellite Radio.

Stern is a scrapper, he isn't happy unless he is fighting and creating. Sure, he could have rested on his laurels but with SIRIUS he has the chance to be a central character in building something new, which is a lot more risky but at least provides a challenge. SIRIUS isn't a perfect platform - the technology isn't as cutting-edge as it was a few years ago, it is losing a lot of money and it provides a much smaller audience than terrestrial radio (and the internet); but it has a LOT of potential and is already revolutionizing the way that we think about radio and music.

And maybe Stern didn't like being defined by his conflict with the stupid rules set by the FCC...

BusinessWeek - A SIRIUS Stab at XM

BusinessWeek is catching on to the Stiletto hype with an article today. Nothing that you haven't seen here before, but here are the highlights:

* A comparably priced XM portable also has a built-in antenna, but stores only half as much content. Stiletto also has built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, letting users download content from the Web at cafés and airports

* Inclusion of Wi-Fi in the Stiletto puts Sirius at the front of a pack of electronics makers expected to feature the wireless broadband connectivity in devices in coming months

* "Sirius has not just caught up with XM but raised the bar," says Frank Viquez, an analyst with consultancy ABI Research.

* In May, XM lowered its full-year subscriber forecast to 8.5 million, from 9 million, citing softness in the industry. But in August, Sirius did the opposite, increasing its 2006 subscriber forecast to 6.3 million.

* With Stiletto holiday sales ramping up, and with 2007 car models with Sirius radios rolled out, Viquez believes that Sirius could reach 50% market share as early as the first quarter of next year. By yearend, Sirius expects to control about 42% of the market, where XM will hold 58% shar

Thus far, 2006 has been a particularly unhappy one for shareholders of both satellite radio competitors, but I expect that to change shortly.

Both Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio peaked in December 2004: XMSR at just above $40 and Sirius at $9.43, just as it announced that Howard Stern would be leaving CBS to join Sirius a year later, in January 2006. By comparison, XMSR is now at about $12.50, and Sirius trades near $4.15. When the stocks were peaking, the industry had 4 million total subscribers. By December 2006 that number should exceed 14 million.

XM took a strong, early lead over Sirius in the number of subscribers it garnered. It had a strong alliance with General Motors, and its product worked properly sooner. XM made a deal with Major League Baseball to broadcast all of its games and offered extensive commercial free music programming. Its brand recognition was superior, and by the end of 2004 it had signed up 3.3 million customers, versus only 1.1 million for Sirius.

Sirius was raging out of control for years. It used its stock to do a deal, any deal, so it now has an outrageous 1.4 billion share base. It paid too much for everything it acquired: Howard Stern, National Football League games, even its former top management. Although it was first-to-concept for satellite radio, it picked the wrong suppliers and lost its early advantage because its system just didn’t work. Time healed that problem, but not before the early adopters bought XM units.

Whoop! Another satellite...

Sometimes I get so used to the ease by which my SIRIUS setup works that I forget that there is a lot of wicked science behind it.

I just got reminded...

SIRIUS is launching a new satellite, this time a geostationary one. SatelliteRadioTechWorld dug up this cool tidbit from an FCC filing. Be sure to check out the main article, but in the meantime, here is a synopsis:

The satellite will be compatible with current and next generation radios
Only two of the four satellites will be used at any given time. All four will be used
The geostationary satellite as well as their present satellites will use an "overlay modulation" technique, which will add an additional 1.35 Mb/s throughput
FM-5 can operate as a true "hot spare" to backup all other satellites
Construction begins 4Q2008

All this translates into increased reliability and a 30% increase in bandwith. SatelliteRadioTechWorld speculates that the extra bandwith could be necessary for the rumored upcoming SIRIUS video.

Save SIRIUS songs as MP3s? Yes.

We had reported on the SiriusConnect Home Tuner earlier this year. The SiriusConnect Home is a little device that can plug into a home stereo system to allow you to play and control your SIRIUS content through your home stereo.

Unlike the SIRIUS Conductor, the SiriusConnect Home (SCH1) must be used with a SiriusConnect compatible stereo system.

In January we had reported that Thomson had announced the first SiriusConnect Home-compatible device, the RCA RS2100 Bookshelf Audio System with "Rip & Go" Functionality, but we hadn't heard much about this device in a while.

That's why we were intrigued when we saw a review of the RCA Home Connect system at the TSS-Radio Blog. Let me be the first to say, this product is much cooler than I thought it would be.

Be sure to read the full review but here are some highlights:

The RCA system is a small bookshelf system that is only slightly larger than a large boombox. The main unit and speakers are separate, so the speakers can be placed apart to improve the stereo image
Next I set up the SIRIUS Home Connect, which was also very simple. It required connecting a single 8 pin cable between the stereo and Home Connect, connecting the SIRIUS antenna, and then plugging it the AC power. The one trick in this setup is that if you only connect the 8 pin cable, you will not be able to record SIRIUS content. You will need to connect either the RCA or optical audio outputs to you recorder. In the case of the RCA unit I tested, you need to connect the audio to the auxiliary inputs to be able to record SIRIUS
The bass boost was overkill for most styles of music besides Hip Hop and R&B were it really added some ommpp to the bass. While listening to rock, jazz or classical it was just to muddy with the bass boost on, but without the boost it sounded great
The big selling point for the RS2058 besides the SIRIUS Ready feature is the included MP3 Player. The top of the main section of the unit has a cut out with a USB port where the MP3 player rests while docked

With this setup, you can record whatever you want on SIRIUS and then save it as an MP3 to the harddrive of your computer. That's pretty damn cool.

As far as I know, TSS-Radio is the only company selling the RCA RS2058 Rip and Go SIRIUS-Ready Home Stereo System ($199) and the Sirius Home Connect Tuner ($49). Both are available together as a package for $239 with free shipping here.

Stiletto Available for Pre-Order

Wired is reporting that the Sirius Stiletto 100 is available for pre-order now at TSS-Radio and Crutchfield.

This is pretty exciting. I doubt SIRIUS would let these stores take pre-orders if they thought that the Stiletto was going to slip past the end of September.

The Wired article also supposes that SIRIUS will become more focused on the internet as a means of distributing audio:

As Wi-Fi and other wireless internet technologies become more widely available, I think those Sirius (and XM) satellites are going to look like a tremendous waste of money. Unfortunately the internet isn't that well-suited to broadcast formats (where pre-set content is received by a wide audience), since it was designed as a means of point-point communication. However, such technical obstacles will eventually become moot as the amount of bandwith increases. I sure do wish that he is right and WiFi/Wireless internet will be available soon on a more widespread basis. It kills me every time I have to pay Starbucks $10 to use their wireless for a few hours.

Also we are told that YAHOO internet radio will be the backbone for the upcoming SIRIUS internet radio. Please note that this info is from an anonymous tip, but we believe that this rumor has some merit. This rumor has been around for some time, but GSI has talked with some insiders and it sounds like it might just happen, and soon...

Sportster 3 Re-Certified by FCC

Satellite Radio Tech World is reporting that the new Sportster 3 is now passed it's re-certification along with the SIRIUS One, Sportster Replayand Xact Visor.

It seems the S50 is the only lone radio to not be re-certified. Hopefully it gets re-certified soon since many people are anxiously awaiting them and most of the Big Box stores and online stores are out of them.

The Sportster 3 is the sister product of the Brix Streamer 3 we reported about here.

Krantz writes: "When individual investors get overly enthusiastic about unproven, unprofitable small companies, there's usually an unhappy ending.

That's precisely what's happened to investors in satellite radio. After the dot-com bubble burst, investors looking for fast money scrambled into these stocks and were richly rewarded for a while. Hardly a day passed without readers asking me about the stocks."

...followed by...

"My views have essentially remained the same. Since that column ran, XM and Sirius
have both posted four more quarters of losses totaling $586.6 million and $813.5 million respectively. Yes, revenue has gained as well, but both companies continue to burn cash."

I don't understand why people listen to columists like Krantz and Cramer...this is really superficial analysis. The only numbers that you should pay attention to with SIRIUS and XM are: customer acquisition cost and lifetime value of the customer (which you can calculate by multiplying the annual subscription fee by the reciprocal of churn, which both companies report).

I bet this guy was negative on cable stocks in the 80s...

SIRIUS officially announced that it will unleash classic unedited material from Howard Stern's last 20 years on radio starting this weekend.

The special programming, which has been censored, criticized, fought over and locked away is now making its triumphant return to the airwaves. The material, culled from thousands of fan requests and drawn from their favorite moments from Howard's coveted canon of radio broadcasts, will be played unedited and censor-free, the way it was meant to be heard.

The all-request special begins Labor Day Weekend, airing Friday, September 1 at 3pm ET and will run through Monday, September 4 at 12 midnight ET on Howard 100. Howard 101 will carry a simultaneous West Coast broadcast.

Chosen from 23,000 hours of tape from the last two decades of Howard's radio career, these fan favorite moments will include unedited interviews with such memorable guests as Paul McCartney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Donald Trump, Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, Sylvester Stallone and Sam Kinison. In addition, bits featuring famed impersonator and past longtime Stern show regular Billy West will air throughout the weekend, as well as classic prank calls, song parodies, live musical performances and much more.

More Details on flat-panel Soloist

Satellite Standard reported some more details about the Sirius Soloist, a docking station with really cool speakers from NXT. We have some more details in addition to our earlier post about the Soloist.

First, a picture, which we found at the press release from NXT:

Second, the best thing about this dock is that it works with a bunch of SIRIUS radios. TSS-Radio's product description for the Soloist, it will work with the Sportster 4 (SP4TK1) and the upcoming Stiletto 100 (SL100PK1), Stiletto 10 (SL10PK1), Sportster 3 (SP3TK1), Starmate 3 (ST3TK1), Starmate 4 (ST4TK1) and Stratus (SV3TK1). It will also connect to any 30-pin IPODs, which includes all the ipods except for the Shuffle.

Third, the sound quality is going to be very good for such a small package, due to the technology that was developed by NXT, a British company. Here is a small description of how it works:

"An exciter converts an electrical signal from an amplifier into force, which in turn produces bending waves in the panel. These bending waves then generate acoustic (sound) waves that travel from the loudspeaker to the listener." Unlike a traditional speaker diaphram, which "pulses" to translate electricity into sound, the NXT speaker speaker surface "bends", creating a more accurate representation of the sound.

Most of the products that NXT makes using this SoundSurface technology are building speakers into places where they usually couldn't be found, for example, in a ceiling tile.

Satellite radio sales grew slowly in July...but SIRIUS is winning!

Jonathan Jacoby of Banc of America Securities posted a research note yesterday (8/29) claiming that satellite industry radio sales grew 2% year-to-year in July. He is just reporting on the NPD numbers.

SIRIUS seems to have achieved the majority of that growth, with XM sales down 29% and Sirius sales up 49% year-over-year. Jacoby wrote that he thinks the XM decrease was due to product shortages because of the FCC emission tests.

It seems as though SIRIUS got a bit of advantage from seeing XM get hit by the FCC first, perhaps the advantage of being a bit smaller and not as squarly in the center of the FCC radar screen. I would bet that SIRIUS began revamping their radios when they first heard of XMs issues and therefore had a few weeks head-start.

Jacoby said that Sirius’ growth was up 49% year-to-year. He informed investors that “Sirius has taken share on account of product shortages for XM.”

At the same time Jacoby advised, “We continue to recommend the XMSR/SIRI pair,” he also warned, “We do NOT believe that satellite radio is out of the woods yet regarding the fallout from the FCC issue.”

Agere Systems Q2 Results - lower satellite radio shipments

Agere makes the chipsets for at least some of SIRIUS' radios. They released their quarterly report on Aug 10, here are some exerpts. Agere makes lots of chips and chipsets, mainly related to telecom applications.

The decreases in both the three and nine month periods were partially offset by increases in shipments of products based on the 2.5G standard. Revenue from the licensing of intellectual property was $8 million for the third quarter, a decrease of $3 million from the prior year and $24 million for the nine months ended June 30, 2006, a decrease of $5 million for the nine months ended June 30, 2005."

Sirius Internet Radio Plus

SiriusBackstage reported yesterday that SIRIUS plans on offering an online-only subscription called "Sirius Internet Radio Plus". The service will offer CD-quality sound on the music channels and select talk channels including Howard 100/101 at 48kbps.

This will cost $12.95 if you are not already a subscriber and you can purchase up to 3 additional subscriptions for $6.99 each. Existing Sirius subscribers can upgrade to SIR Plus for an additional $2.99 a month. The $2.99 is just for one of your ESN's however, so if you have seperate SIR accounts on each of them you'll have to pay $2.99 for each to upgrade. As far as we know Sirius does not have any plans to offer channels on the new service that aren't available via your Sirius receiver.

Subscribers are not required to upgrade to the new service, if you are happy with the current online streaming (which lacks the talk channels) you can stick with that, which is still free.

It is not clear exactly which talk stations will be included, other than Howard, but the speculation is that the sports channels will not be included. People on SBS are complaining about the price, arguing that this should be a free upgrade for people who already subscribe.

Sirius Conductor system

Satellite radio provider Sirius has introduced the Sirius Conductor system, a home radio and wireless controller that allows control of the system from up to 150 feet away. The Conductor attaches to a home stereo system, with metadata streaming to the wireless controller.

Two audio zones can be used with the Sirius Conductor, which includes an IR blaster, radio/transceiver and weatherproof antenna. The controller can control six additional A/V components and can set up to 30 channels as favorites.

The Conductor has an MSRP of $149.99 and should be available in November.

"Free" Sirius Radio for existing subscribers

I just happened to hear an ad for this while listening. Apparently if you are an existing subscriber and purchase a boombox or home kit, you can get a free Starmate. You must also purchase at least a 6 month subscription (at the $6.99 rate)

While it's certainly not "free", if you were planning on getting a second unit or home kit, this would be a pretty good deal. Log into your account to see this option. While the terms say a free Starmate or Sportster, the picture shows a Starmate Replay and One, so I'm not sure what you would actually get.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio unveiled the Starmate4, Starmate3, Sportster3 and SIRIUS Stratus. Each radio can fit into a universal home dock, car dock and boombox - all using the same connector configuration as the SIRIUS Sportster4.

The new Sportster3 features a slim design and the same easy-to-use rotary tuning knob and large buttons known for the Sporster series. Essentially the Sportster3 is a stripped down version of the Sportster4, but without the Replay functionality. The package includes a vehicle power adapter, remote, vehicle antenna, vehicle dock and suction cup mount. The Sportster3 is expected to be available in September, and MSRP at $119.99.

The Starmate4 has been designed with an ultra-slim form-factor while maintaining a large wide-screen display that provides the ability to view longer artist names and song titles with up to five lines of text. The Starmate4, like the Sportster4, also replays up to 44 minutes of content and can pause, rewind and fast-forward. The Starmate4 package includes the receiver, vehicle power adapter, remote, vehicle antenna, vehicle dock, and vehicle mounts. The Starmate4 will be available in October at an MSRP of $119.99.

The Starmate3 provides a less expensive way to experience the Starmate. Expected to hit retail in October, the Starmate3 has all of the features of the Starmate4 except for the 44 minute replay capability. The radio, at an MSRP of $99.99, will be available at select stores, and includes the receiver, vehicle power adapter, remote, vehicle antenna, vehicle dock and vehicle mounts.

All three units will feature SIRIUS' GameZone, GameAlert, One-touch Jump, S-Seek, and other features we're used to from newer SIRIUS plug-and-play receivers.

The SIRIUS Stratus, expected to be available in October at an MSRP of $59.99, is the affordable receiver option that still features the new SIRIUS universal docking capability. Features include: 10 button presets, direct entry tuning, a three line display and large buttons - as well as push button controls, One-touch Jump, 10 presets, direct channel access, parental controls, a 100 channel built-in wireless FM transmitter, FM frequency shortcut button, and a real time clock. The package includes the receiver, vehicle power adapter, magnetic antenna, and dash and vent mounts.

-The Piggly Wiggly grocery store brand has made SIRIUSBusiness its recommended background music service. Piggly Wiggly, whose headquarters are in Carrollton, Texas, has nearly 600 grocery outlets across the nation.

-Big Boy Restaurants International LLC has selected SIRIUSBusiness as the official background music for its fast casual restaurants throughout the United States. Headquartered in Warren, Michigan, Big Boy Restaurants International LLC is the exclusive worldwide franchiser of more than 455 Big Boy restaurants.

-SiriusBusiness has pacted with Ford Motor Company to provide Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers in the U.S. with SIRIUSBusiness for showroom music. The agreement presents an opportunity for Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers to use their showroom music as a 'point of purchase' sales tool to promote sales of SIRIUS receivers and service to vehicle purchasers.

-High-end sandwich shop Spicy Pickle has selected SIRIUSBusiness as the background music provider for its fast casual restaurants throughout the United States. The chain has grown nearly 20 locations across the country. The Spicy Pickle serves gourmet sub sandwiches, grilled paninis, and specialty salads.

-Super Suppers of Fort Worth, Texas, has selected SIRIUSBusiness as the background music provider for its Super Locations throughout the United States.

-The Memphis Days Inn at Graceland, the official hotel of The Elvis Fan Club, has selected SIRIUSBusiness as the background music service for its property.

-Up The Creek Restaurants of America, Inc. has selected SIRIUSBusiness as the official background music service for its restaurants throughout the United States.

-The Coffee Beanery, where fine quality coffees, deliciously healthy foods and warm, friendly people come together all across the country, has teamed-up with SIRIUS Satellite Radio to offer background music in its stores.

Four Seasons Silicon Valley Teams With Sirius

The Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley recently opened with SIRIUS Radio as their exclusive background music provider. The service, SIRIUSBusiness, provided by Applied Media Technologies Corporation (AMTC), consists of 67 channels of 24-hour, commercial-free music from SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

“Because of its location in the heart of high-tech California, it is natural that the Four Seasons would employ a high-tech solution for its music needs. With SIRIUS Satellite Radio, they have just that,” assured Martin Rund, Director of Strategic Partnerships for AMTC. “And, they have been able to achieve this without having to sign any long-term contract.”

“We are very pleased with our decision to install this music system,” remarked Scott Mills, Director of Food & Beverage at the Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley in East Palo Alto, CA. “Our guests have very exacting standards and I believe that SIRIUS music have exceeded their expectations.”

SIRIUS Added to Over 600 CiCi's Pizza Restaurants

SIRIUS Satellite Radio's business services unit, SIRIUS Business, has inked a deal with CiCi's Pizza to include SIRIUS as background music for over 600 restaurants throughout the US. SIRIUS Business is provided exclusively by Applied Media Technologies Corporation (AMTC) under the brand name as a service for business, presenting competition to similar services such as Muzak.

Under the agreement, AMTC will also provide sound equipment to the CiCi's Pizza Restaurant locations.
