In an interview with Jim Meyer SIRIUS' president of Operations and Sales; said, Sirius would have a wearable product capable of receiving live radio available during the summer. The radio is expected to include MP3 playing functionality in addition to offering consumers the ability to purchase songs. Sirius believes that availability of memory on the receivers has the potential to transform the industry, just like DVRs.
Jim Meyer also added that XM Satellite Radio's technological lead is likely to decline in the foreseeable future with each new generation of chipsets. He expects the gap in terms of receiver size and features to narrow significantly by the holiday selling season in the fourth quarter of 2006.
GSI is told that SIRIUS management is focused on delivering more features and enhanced services to consumers, while it critically evaluates the business case of each decision with regard to free-cash-flow goals.
SIRIUS also has a new view on product announcements, unlike with the S50 when there was a long wait from the time of the announcement to the S50 hit the streets. This also lead to the release date keep slipping, SIRIUS will now announce new products very close to the release date. Also SIRIUS wants to keep all the information locked down tight. Last year GSI was the first to report on the new Starmate Replay and hinted at the S50 via leaked photos and info. SIRIUS is trying hard to make sure new products are not leaked out.
