GSI Review: JVC KD-AVX1 with SIRIUS Connect

Thursday, February 02, 2006

Just got this new head unit, and I have to say it has it all for a price that is not out of this world the MSRP of the head unit is $649.95. (I got it for $399.00 from GOPC Plus, ordered it Sunday night got it Tuesday) You get a in dash DVD player, that is SIRIUS ready. I also got the SIRIUS Connect for the JVC from The Sirius Store, making this head unit one sweet multimedia in dash entertainment system. The display is 3 inches, it is small, but it is just the right size for me. The DVD playback is just out of this world, crisp and clean. Now that same full color display is used to display SIRIUS info. I think the major draw back to most satready head units is the display. Most head units scroll, the info. The KD-AV1 has a multi line display. You can set it to Artist and Song Title or category and station name. Each line scrolls when needed just like a sportster or starmate. The install was not to bad, the biggest pain was the “parking break line this is a safety feature that will prevent the front seat from seeing the DVD video play back. (there is a very easy way around this). The unit will also allow for external monitors, for the backseats. There is a audio/video line in.. That will let choose the following settings; audio & video in or just audio in. If your car has a backup camera or you want to get one, this head unit will also work with that, put your car in R and a bumper cam will turn on. The other nice thing is you can name FM stations, and name your inputs. The SIRIUS audio quality is very good, this unit gives out tons of base. I switch between the S50, via the line in and the JVC SIRIUS connect and notice very little difference is sound quality. The SIRIUS connect has more volume to play with. One last cool thing to note this head unit will play GIGA MP3s. You can burn a DVD full of MP3s and have 4.7G of music on one disc. I called JVC and talked to a product engineer about this unit working with the upcoming SIRIUS video service. He told me that, they do not know a lot about it, but from what he knows SIRIUS will sell a SIRIUS Connect that will support video, and it will have normal RCA A/V outputs that will work with most any in car video monitor, and the A/V input on the AVX1 will support that. He added that the AVX1 has been engineered to handle and control SIRIUS Connect units… Here is all the info on the head unit. I really like this unit, if you are looking for in dash DVD and SIRIUS under $500.oo this is for you..
