Satellite radio provider Sirius, the title sponsor of the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at the track the last four years, has dropped its sponsorship of the race, WGI Senior Manager of Public Relations Eiron Smith said Tuesday.
"Sirius is no longer our title sponsor for the NASCAR event," she said.
"Last year was one of our strongest years, and this is something that corporate decided to do at Sirius," Smith said. "Last year, we were able to bring on seven brand-new sponsors. We already have people out there ready to talk to us about (sponsorship)."
Watkins Glen had a second three-year contract with Sirius that started with the 2005 race. However, Smith said Glen officials were told Sirius was not contractually obligated to remain as sponsor for all three years. She said she did not know why Sirius decided to drop its sponsorship.
"It's very early in the year," she said. "We're just creating the 2006 brochure. ... I hate to say it doesn't really affect us, but we're moving forward."
I think that this is going to affect SIRIUS... It is one more way mel is saving CASH.. and now that NASCAR will be moving to SIRIUS in 2007, there is no need...
