100 More Channels for SIRIUS?!?!

Sunday, January 22, 2006

There is a video on Cnet.com, a caller asked the Cnet folks what is better SIRIUS or XM?!?!? In this video clip the Cnet.com guys talked about SIRIUS having an edge on getting "Dozens or hundreds more stations.." You can watch the video here. SIRIUS hinted at this new technology back in June in the PR. "New Modulation Technology Will Initially Increase Current System Capacity by Approximately 25%, Enabling SIRIUS to Expand Offering of Audio, Data and Video Services While Maintaining Broadcast Quality"

SIRIUS has developed a new, advanced proprietary technology that will initially increase the company's total network capacity by approximately 25% within its existing digital transmission system. The technology, known in the industry as hierarchical modulation, will allow SIRIUS to offer additional audio channels, as well as advanced services such as data and video, without affecting the quality of its broadcasts."Our new modulation technology will use a very innovative approach to increase the number of bits we transmit through our satellite and terrestrial repeater networks, enabling us to increase the effective use of our currently licensed spectrum to add additional programming for the benefit of our subscribers," said Jim Meyer, SIRIUS President, Sales and Operations. "Sirius will continue to deliver uncompromised sound quality, and with this new technology we will retain the flexibility to expand our broadcasts even further in the future."
The technology, developed by SIRIUS' Advanced Development Team based in Lawrenceville, NJ, will work over SIRIUS' current network, with minimal upgrades to its satellite uplink and terrestrial repeater infrastructure. SIRIUS has already conducted several tests of the technology to confirm the performance. The new modulation technology will not impact the customer experience of existing SIRIUS radios sold or currently on the market. Future SIRIUS radios will be outfitted with the new technology, making it possible for them to receive the additional services planned.

The company expects to begin offering services using the new technology in the second-half of 2006.

We are told that SIRIUS hinted to this at CES to a closed door room of retail VIP's... We are told that in the June 2006 time frame news SIRIUS chips will be out and this hierarchical modulation technology will be in new units.

This technique is just as available to XM as it is to Sirius.

Any reasonable person would expect that XM is far ahead on developing it, just as they are on every other "technological innovation" Sirius has claimed, from the Plug & Play receiver (invented by XM), to the wearable receiver (still only available from XM) to in-car video (XM showed ready-to-run capabilities at CES at least 10x better than what Sirius has shown, XM's was actually working in Jan'06, Sirius has put their's off once again).

The pursuit of some technical innovation for Sirius to claim as their own remains an elusive one, and XM will, no doubt, beat them to the punch on H/M as well.

This is undoubtedly someone's idea to get the price of Sirius stock out of the doldrums.

I think CNet is a good source. I'm sure XM is working on it also. XM could sell a sold gold PNP but still I like to content on SIRIUS better then XM. SIRIUS is also know not to blow thier load like XM likes to.

HM has indeed already been linked to XM for a while now, and resurfaced recently with their announcement of XM-HD Surround as well. Sirius doesn't have the exclusive on this, and the guy in the video doesn't know anything "special" he's getting his info from the same place we all are, a place called "hear-say".

If I remember correctly, XM's reponce to this was to buy a company to boost their spectrum. Do you guys really think if XM was able to dublicate this technology they'd buy more spectrum? Probably not, and if they could Sirius did scare them into spending money in more Spectum. Clear Winner on this is Sirius. I can't wait to see this "mini Repeater" thingy that should be coming out....... That , and I wonder why Apollo sold $40 million in stock, maybe to buy another company (spectrum) for Sirius??

There are good things to come from Sirius. I'm behind them all the way. Time to buy the stock while its still cheap. You can still get a lot more bang for your buck buying SIRI stock then the other guys. The future is looking bright and the sun is shineing on the birds in the sky!

Yes, XM has already mentioned the words "hierarchical modulation" so it's not a Sirius exclusive technology. Like I said, it was brought up in response to XM-HD Surround.

The WCS spectrum is being rumored to be for their video offerings, which is supposedly what they used when they showed their 8-10 channels of live video at CES in the Lexus.

So it sounds to me like XM is planning to use HM for audio offerings and WCS for video in major cities only... that's my take on the situation.

Honestly, Sirius should concentrate on figuring out how to drop PAC (their CODEC) rather than HM technology for the existing one...

XM has not been granted approval to use the bandwidth purchased from WCS.
