Once again, Mel Karmazin gets Free Press for Sirius. Yesterday when Sirius put out the 3Q numbers in a conference call, Mel said, "We're even very happy to help his current employer, because we'd like to buy a whole bunch of advertising on his terrestrial radio show in November and December, and that will help their revenue as well, Karmazin said, before adding, “They haven't yet accepted it." This got very good press today and 1st editions this morning was running the story that Infinity would not run Sirius Ads for Stern. Today a Sirius spokesman told Billboard.com says Mel was only kidding. According to Sirius VP of corporate communications Jim Collins, Mel was smiling when he made the comment. “He was just joshing, Collins said. “It was a joke. Sirius plans to aggressively market its service for the crucial holiday shopping season, using TV, print, movies and other media, Collins said. But a time buy on Stern’s Infinity outlets isn’t part of the media mix. As Paul Heine of Billboard said, "After all, Sirius doesn’t need to. Stern gives his future radio home a lengthy free commercial every day on his syndicated morning show." Get ready for tons of Sirius Ads all over the place but not on Mels old companies stations.. Not only did the press cover the good 3Q, and they printed Mel Joke, they also had to print the new facts.
