Sirius In The Air

Saturday, October 08, 2005

Tomorrow I fly across the country, and I have done this a few times this year. As you know if you fly a lot know inflight music sucks and the cut up movies are not the best. I have got a little set up to get Sirius in flight. I will post how I do it today and I will take some inflight photos tomorrow, to show the set up at work. This also will make any Siruis unit portable... with alot of wires..
What you will need to make this work:
PR2310 Universal Li-Ion Power Bank 3-12V DC
12V power pack - I use this one and it works with Starmate, Starmate Replay, Sportster, Sportster Boombox, and JVC SR-1000. This battery pack will give you 3V-12V of power, and comes with four ends, some Sirius radios you may need to run to Radio Shack and buy one to fit all the radios.. It last over 4 hours at 12V.

Sirius Home Antenna

You will need a home antenna.. You will also need a WINDOW seat.. The home antenna will fit nice between the window shade and the window...
A Boostaroo
This thing will amp your headphone volume, and most Sirius radios will need it so you can hear the audio...
Headphones
Any type of headphones..

I have had very good coverage and drop outs are not bad at all, the only time things get bad is when taking off or landing. Once you are up at 30,000 you will get a very nice clear signal .

Now the only guidelines from the Airlines that I can find is you can not transmit, so make sure your FM transmitter is OFF. Other then that Sat radio is safe to have inflight.

This has worked on the following aircraft:
B737
B757
B767
B777
A319
A320

I love the idea of taking Sirius on the road, but this seems like an airport security nightmare waiting to happen.

Never had a problem with security, the most questions I got from other people on board was, what is that? I guess I should add this, I fly 1st class and Biz class, so most of the time the crew are cool about things, and one did once ask the Captain if it was ok, he told her, "As long as he is not transmitting".. My bag was looked in once, it was random.. no questions..

One other cool thing is the Bosteroo has 3 headphone outs so I have let the lady next to me listen to the football with me once..

Wow I thought I was a Sirius addict. This guy has got it bad. Pretty cool that you were able to do this, but wow, that's a lot of work to go through for a couple of hours of in flight listening.

I've taken my Audiovox boombox on a plane before and was easy to listen to SIRIUS from Birmingham to Chicago and back. Even though the flights were North and South-bound, I chose a seat that was toward the center of the US and didn't have signal issues.

It is not the much work, when you fly from East to West it is around 5 hours in the air... Also NFL today was nice to have. East to West flights it is best to get a Window seat on the Co-Poilt side, and West to East Window on Poilt side..

Wouldn't it be interesting to call in from the air to a talk show like the Radio Chick or Jay Thomas.

"Damian on the Airphone??? your on with the Radio Chick".

Jetblue does offer 100 channels of XM (in all jets by the end of 2005).

XM is also in Air Tran... Sirius needs to work something out like this with an Airline..

Sirius should approach Southwest, they sponsor the NFL, so Sirius/Southwest would work.

that is regoddamndiculous you could spend the 50 hrs gathering stuff at radio shack or you could have just bought an xm myfi like 8 months ago

I have a Myfi and it works like crap in a flight.... And I can not listen to NFL play off games on it. If it takes you 50 hours to go shopping I think you need to see your Satrad and get some help.

Wow, I thought the first pic was of a Sirius portable. I prefer my MyFi which fits in my pocket rather than a setup I need a backpack to carry around.

When is Sirius going to come out with a real portable player? XM has 4 out already with more to come in March. Go with XM if you want real portability. This is just stupid.

So only ONE of the previous comments is from the same IP, not including my response.
What you should have said is that the last 3 refering links came from the same web site.
Let's get it straight next time.
